Fishing
Engagement Time
15 Minutes
Fishing is designed to improve your little one’s letter recognition skills but it lends itself wonderfully to any area in which your little one is experiencing recall difficulties such as particular numbers or, for older children, sight words.
Materials Required
Letters of the alphabet printed onto Cardboard Paper Clips Scissors Marker Pen 2 Chop Sticks String 2 Strong Magnets Masking Tape
Method
Before beginning to have a go at fishing for letters you will need to cut out the letters of the alphabet and attach a paper clip to each. Using the masking tape stick one end of the string to the chopstick and the other end to the magnet. You and your little one are now ready to start fishing for your chosen letters. Extension: Once your little one has improved their letter recognition skills you may wish to fish for the letters you need to spell certain words. You could also have a second set of letters, such as a scrabble game in a paper bag, and see who is the first to find the letter you pull out of the bag. If this is working well you may wish to step it up even further by each fishing at random and then score points using those values ascribed to the letters from scrabble which will incorporate addition skills into the activity.
