Make a Puzzle

Engagement Time

20 Minutes

Make a Puzzle is designed to improve your little one’s drawing, colouring and problem solving skills as they attempt to create and solve unique puzzle of their own.

Materials Required

Make a Puzzle
  • Thick Cardboard
  • Pens/Pencils/Crayons/Paint
  • Black Marker Pen
  • Scissors
  • Envelope for Storage

Method

For this activity you may choose to use a sheet of blank cardboard or purchase a set of three blank puzzles which are available from craft shops or some larger supermarkets. Either way the activity will be basically the same as you will begin the activity by using one side of the cardboard to draw and colour a picture. You may wish to assist with the drawing and let your little one colour in your pictures or let them have free reign of the activity.

Once the picture has been coloured you can draw puzzle pieces on top of the picture and then use these lines to cut out the puzzle. Again this could be an activity you perform or you could allow your little one to complete it depending on their dexterity and precision. Once cut you should place the pieces into an envelope so that you will not lose them and your little one can pull the puzzle out when you have a spare few minutes to fill in.

Extension: Once your little one has completed a couple of puzzles and is now quite proficient at this task you may wish to make it more difficult by having them use both sides of the cardboard.

This activity develops skills in these areas:
