Obstacle Course

Engagement Time

15 - 20 minutes

Obstacle Course is designed to improve your little one’s gross motor skills and general co-ordination.

Materials Required

  • Pillows
  • Rope
  • Hoops
  • Chairs
  • Ball
  • Tube - such as the inside of a paper towel roll and Bucket.

Method

For this activity you will need to place various objects in a circular fashion so that you little one can clearly see where they are expected to travel to complete the course.  Once set up you can show your little one exactly what you would like them to do at each point in the course.  Some of the activities could include jumping over a pillow forwards and backwards (make this something soft so that if they fall onto it they will not get hurt); rolling a ball through a tube or throwing it into a bucket, kicking a ball through the legs of  chair or climbing over a rope (keep this fairly low to avoid accidents).  The course is limited only by that which you have on hand and your imagination.

Extension
If appropriate you may wish to include imaginative play with the obstacle course such as letting your little one pretend to be a commando escaping from an enemy or a fairy trying to get through the obstacle course 3 times to be able to win their wings.  Similarly you may wish to create a make believe story for each activity such as climbing over a fallen log in the jungle (the rope) and jumping over a crocodile infested swamp (the pillow).

This activity develops skills in these areas:
