Scales

Engagement Time

15-20 Minutes

Scales is designed to improve your little one’s ability to identify objects and order them by weight and size.

Materials Required

Scales

Kitchen and/or bathroom scales Various objects to weigh according to the scales being used.

Method

There are some households were scales are used on a very regular, even daily basis, while in other households they are a rarity or even non-existent. If this is the case in your home this activity could be completed while doing the shopping as most chemists, green grocers and larger supermarket chains have a set of scales available for you to use. Once a set of scales has been sourced it is merely a case of placing various items onto the scales and ordering them from heaviest to lightest. It may also be worth ordering them from largest to smallest as the largest item may not necessarily be the heaviest and the smallest may not be the lightest. Extension: Once you have weighed the object you had collected you may ask your little one open ended questions such as: Which items can you think of which would be heavier/lighter than you? Which items can you think of which would be lighter than the apple? Which items can you think of which would be smaller than your favourite teddy bear?

This activity develops skills in these areas:
