Engagement Time

3 Minutes Per Round

Scategories is designed to improve your little one’s initial letter identification skills and will also help them to develop their language and recall skills.

Materials Required

Scategories
  • A timer
  • A list of the categories being used

Method

Normally this is an adult game played using paper and pencils. However, due to the limited writing skills of children this age it would be advisable that this is played orally. To start this activity you and your little one will need to decide which categories you will be using such as a food, a place, a name and an animal. Once these have been chosen you can then choose a letter with which each category must begin and start the timer. If the chosen letter was say ā€˜S’ your little one would then try to list sausage, swimming pool, Susan and snake before the time ran out.

Extension: If your little one enjoys this game you may wish to have them name and draw a picture of the items such as food, clothing and colour before the time runs out.

This activity develops skills in these areas:
