Water or Sand Play

Engagement Time

15 Minutes

Water or Sand Play is designed to improve your little one’s ability to recognise half, quarter, full, empty, bottom, top and other measurement related terms.

Materials Required

Water or Sand Play

Water or Sand Cups, Bottles, Bowls or anything that can hold and pour water and sand.

Method

There is no doubt that young children just love playing with both sand and water so why not use the hours they spend in the bath or sand pit as a learning experience. While you are both happily playing ask your little one to do some small things for you such as fill the cup to the top, empty the red bowl of sand into the blue bucket. You may also ask questions such as how many red cup fulls of sand fill the blue bucket or show them that the green cup will fill one quarter of the yellow tin. Note: For this to work your little one is best not to know that you are "teaching" them about volume but rather allow them to hear you using the correct terminology and to adopt it as their own to demonstrate a complete understanding of the terms being used.
